Newbie breaking in ninja 250?

Question

Im new at riding, let alone driving manual transmission.. i bought a brand new 08 ninja 250r and the manual suggests i stay at rpms around 5000 for the first 500 miles. Since im doing this, im at around 50 mph on 6th gear and if i go any faster, ill be at around 7000 rpms so im just wondering if it would be okay to go past the recommended 5000 rpms or if doing so would hurt my bike?

it wont, the 5000 rpm is like a guidline, they just want u to stay around there whether if your staying at it or below it or a little bit above it. Just make sure u vary the rpm. after you put about 1000 miles, ride it like u stole it for a few hundred miles so the engine will get broken in hard and will be broken in for extreme riding when u feel like it. Stay at or below 5000 RPM for the first 500 miles then at 800 miles increase that to 7000 RPM at 1000 miles you can go whatever the limiter allows you to. Also make sure you change your oil and filter at about 500 miles b/c there will be little pieces of metal in the oil from the cylinder setting.

I've been reading up on the Ninja 250r, because I plan on buying one. Congrats!! I'm jealous as well. I read where you begin to get more power and better gas mileage after 1000miles. So yeah... initially, take it easy. Just think of it like this, it gives you a reason to ride it more. :O) ahha... just go cruisin' alot, and you'll be at 500 or 1000miles in not time.

Welcome to the family.  Carefully follow the break in instructions in the owner's manual--it was written by highly trained engineers.  With advanced degrees and all that.  It's not like 5500 or even brief periods of higher revs will kill it, but they give you those figures for a reason.  Stay within the RPM range stated in the manual.  Also, don't stay too long at one speed/RPM--part of a proper break in is to put the engine parts through several heating & cooling cycles. It provides annealing and reduces/relieves internal stresses on the various parts of the engine & bearings.  It also permits the rings to seat properly with the cylinder walls.  I don't personally understand the mechanics and metallurgy involved, but I'm quoting every magazine article I've read in 15 years I've been a motorcyclist, as well as every owner's manual of every car or bike I've ever owned.  Think of it as a chance to scout out some of the more interesting local roads and learn them less aggressively.

As important as the gentle-ish factory spec break in is, even more important is that first (500-600 mile) oil change.  You'll be astonished how much metal shrapnel is in that first change.  If you don't  get it out, it's just gonna run back through, and wreak havoc on your engine.  Which reminds me: oil is the lifeblood of any engine, and the Ninja 250 has a capacity of 1.9L--just a little less than a bottle of soda.  If you run even a little low on oil, the results are likely to be very serious.
