The first OFFICIAL NHL Stanley cup winner was the Ottawa Senators in 1926-27.

Before Relocating to St. Louis for a brief stint, the senators won 1 Stanley cup as part of the NHL until coming back in the early 90's.. they havn't won a cup in their new era.. and i hope they never do.

so no Technically it wasn't Montreal in the NHL. That was back in an Era where teams from all over the place competed for the cup. So i guess they were kind of the first to win the cup, but not the first in the NHL.
