  1. Not knowing what kind of food you and your DH like makes it difficult to recommend anything specific.  Here's is my list of tried and true special occasion favorites.

Just as good, less expensive, non chain option for steaks in a cool environment - Izzys on Steiner at Lombard: - This SF institution is known for steaks, seafood and stiff drinks. Eclectic historical pics decorate this dark wood paneled favorite. Don’t miss the creamed spinach, Popeye would give up the canned stuff in a minute for theirs.

    Seafood at its best:

Tadich Grill 240 California-The Original Cold Day Restaurant: An old boy’s kind of place that has been around since 1849. Great seafood, chops and sourdough. Stiff drinks, no reservations, but counter seats are first come first served.

Hays Street Grill 320 Hayes at Gough. Fresh fish shines at this neighborhood favorite. They specialize in grilling fish and then serving it with your choice of sauces that only enhance the taste of the fish and shellfish.

Farallon – 450 Post- Seafood served in an amazing underwater garden setting $$$$

Some eclectic restaurants that are a good bet:

E&O Trading Post – 314 Sutter – Asian Fusion – Indian Thai and Chinese dishes

Le Colonial on Cosmo place [between sutter and post and between Jones and Taylor] serves Vietnamese food and great drinks in a lush interior with lots of plants and intimate nooks.

Cortez – in the Adagio hotel 550 Geary – creative California small plates $$$

Millennium – 580 Geary at jones - vegan food that will amaze even confirmed carnivores.

  2. If you aren't opposed to spending some money, DEFINATELY you must try RUTH'S CHRIS STEAKHOUSE!! I It is a five star restaurant and you'll never have a better experience. They have melt in your mouth steaks! And seafood and chicken dishes as well. Their au gratin potatoes which are served in their own sizzling hot dish are exquisite! Be prepared to spend atleast $130 though....I know its spendy but its so worth it!!!!

  3. House of prime rib. For more fun atmospherery bocca di beppa or bennihannas. Great food and fun.

  4. I live in San Francisco. Don't go to a chain restaurant. If you want a pricey yet elegant meal. Boulevard on Market Street. If you want a great view Carnelian Room on California street. If you want something romantic where the food is okay, Hornblower Cruises that go around the bay for two hours while serving a 4 course dinner. You want something you can both giggle about. The Stinking Rose on Columbus. Hope you have a great time.

  5. Try Teatro ZinZanni. It's expensive but great food and a great show! Their website is http://love.zinzanni.org

  6. Try House of Prime Rib, it's a very popular place and is casual/dressy. They have awesome cuts of meat, and fish if you don't like steak. I love the salad and the bread! Everyone that I know that has gone there LOVES it!

  7. tadich grill on california street

  8. You can't go wrong with  SCOMA'S on the Wharf or in North beach section " Calzones"

  9. Bacar

    448 Brannan St

    San Francisco, CA

Awesome Mediterranean style food with a Northern California flair. My cousin is one of the head chef's there. The place is charming and the quality and presentation of the food is impeccable.
