Nikon Coolpix 5700 - sudden failure

Nikon Coolpix 5700 - had it several years and it has always worked perfectly. Tried to use it today - on switching on everything seems OK except no image in the monitor, only settings revealed. Attempted to take pic and download to my PC but there was no result, just black. Any advice very welcome - I am a complete novice.
