Nikon D50 Shutter Priority?

i have a nikon d50, and i want a faster shutter speed. i know how to adjust it, but it wont go any faster than 1/500. i know for a fact it can go up to 1/4000 as i have done it before, but it won't move!! any help would be much appreciated!!

The flash is the answer.

The fastest sync speed for flash is 1/500. That's actually really fast, compared to lots of other cameras (1/100 is more typical).

Many cameras don't stop you from mis-setting the shutter speed when using flash. Apparently Nikon (cleverly, or paternalistically) prevents you from doing this.

To be sure it's not the camera, try using M (manual mode) and see it the command dial will let you select a faster shutter speed.  I see no problem accessing the full shutter range with my camera.  You might want to try a higher ISO, as the camera may be locking out too high shutterspeeds for the ISO you are using.

You need to be in shutter priority mode.  If you are in one of the other modes, such as aperture priority, the camera will give priority to the selected aperture and change the other settings as needed to allow enough light in for a properly exposed picture.

If you are in SP mode, be sure your ISO is set properly for the shutter speed you want.

You can use faster shutter speed if you put it into manual M mode. Yes the 1/500 is limited because of the flash is set on. Just turn off the flash sync.
