No Sound from my pc?

Now okay I had someone fix my pc and he forgot at least and I'm going on what he said "he forgot to install the soundcard" So I was pissed of course but thought great perhaps it's something I can do. So I did some research and it seems like something relatively easy that I can do on my own. You may say why didn't I just call the pc repairman back...well he is not reliable, took him a long time to come back after repeated calls to him and other issues. So I did some research on soundcards, than purchased one a Diamond Xtreme Sound 5.1 16 bit sound card. I just tried to install it and first off It doesn't look like I thought it would..it has multi colored holes that say Line In, Mic, F-Out, R-Out, C/LFE etc. Problem is my computer has some similar things like that on the back...I see available slots but it doesn't fit of course cause of the metal thing that houses the multi colored holes...HELP!!...I just want to hear my music. Did I purchase the wrong sound card?. What could be the problem? Is it not the soundcard? When I go into control panel...to Sounds, speech and audio devices and click on volume..it tells me "No Audio device. And the rest of the settings are grayed out.

And my speakers are built into my flat screen monitor.

  1. it sounds like you have your sound card already installed onto the motherboard. you may not have needed to buy one. you need to go into the bios or cmos to enable the onboard sound card..if that is the case then you should return the one you bought..if the one you bought cannot fit into any available slot, then it is the wrong one..take the computer where you bought the card and ask the salesman to see if they have a compatible one....good luck..

  2. Make sure your Sound Driver isn't disabled, it may have inadvertently disabled itself during shutdown:

Go to Device Manager (Start> RightClick My Computer> Properties> Hardware Tab> Device Manager) and right click on your sound driver and choose enable. If not, try updating the driver, that will effectively restore it to factory settings if there's an update available.

If you don't know the name of you Sound Driver, so to Start> Run> dxdiag. Now go to the Sound Tab and any sound hardware installed is listed.

If that still doesn't work, the driver may have been uninstalled. If so, go to your computer's manufacturer's website and go to the "Support" section. There should be a link for drivers. You will need to know your computer's model, but once you enter that it will give you and option to download any missing drivers. Just find the Sound Driver and install it.

    Hope that helps =]

  3. you may need to install the driver.  this is software that comes with the soundcard that you need to install to get the sound card to work properly.  It is usually on the cdrom that came with the card.  You can still use your onboard motherboard by reinstalling the drivers as well.
