Question:

Noise after tire rotation?

I have a 2006 pontiac G6 with 43000 miles on it. I had my tires rotated for the first time back in June, since then my car is not riding as smooth and makes a faint thudding/flapping type noise when I drive over 40 and there is a very slight vibration on my steering wheel. The place I took them to says it is just the uneven wear on the tires becuase they bring the back to front and front to back so it will make that noise and if they put them back the noise will stop. My friend seems to think I need new tires.

  1. They are right most likey.. they are uneven wear. No if you put them back they probably wont help because now they have wear where you've got them now. You can get them rebalanced at walmart for 15 bucks at the most and see if they can get them closer to being balanced. I've seen people do bad balancing jobs on the tires. Try it again and then see. Its cheaper than new tires. ALso, nice car.

  2. could be a balancing issue....that woudl explain a lot of your symptoms

  3. With FWD cars you really need to rotate tires at 7 to 10K. The rear axle is solid, hops a lot and if tires are left in place too long they tend to cup. That is what has happened to yours and why they now make a noise on the front. Rotating them back will stop the noise but won't solve the adverse wear patterns which are already established. However, unless you just have scads of money and don't mind spending it, I wouldn't replace them until tread wear mandates it. The tires are safe. Why not save a lot of money and get all the wear out of them that you safely can.

  4. The car place is right; you should rotate your tires every 10,000 miles or so. The purpose is to keep the wear patterns even, since the front tires wear more quickly, and in a different pattern than the rear tires.

New tires would definitely solve the problem, though. If you can't afford a new set now, it might be a good idea to put them back the way they were, so the vibration doesn't affect your car.

If you buy new tires two at a time, put the new ones on the rear. New tires have better traction, and if you put the new tires on the front, you could lose control in a turn, especially if the road is wet or icy.

  5. Sounds like your tires need to be balanced and road forced. Tires and rims have their high and low spots. If you take it to your local dealership they can road force your tires. Meaning match the low side of the tire to the high side of the rim. Most of the time that will either fix or diminish your vibration.
