  1. ( o Y o )

  2. The language (and tone) in which an email is written says a lot about the person writing the email. That's non-verbal communication -- It's about the subtleties of implication that you notice outright or choose to notice after some analysis.

  3. ... smilies?

Or maybe if they send you a picture of their exact expression at the time of writing? Haha! There's not much one can communicate without words concerning e-mail or letters. I suppose in a way you might insinuate something from what they're saying as well, though that's still dealing with what they wrote. For example, if earlier in the day you saw the sender looking depressed but then they acted all right in the e-mail? Therefore they might be having trouble telling you exactly what's going on.
