Norm Chow's contract extension approved
According to report published by ESPNLosAngeles.com on Wednesday, a UCLA spokesperson stated that the university has received approval for Norm Chow’s contract extension. Chow currently serves on the school’s football staff as Bruins’ offensive coordinator.
Chow’s extension, which was agreed upon over the summer, made it to the University of California Board of Regents last week, where it was eventually accepted. On Monday 22 November, the UCLA Athletics chief financial officer was informed of the approval via
email.
Wednesday’s news is the most recent in what has been a roller coaster week for the offensive coordinator. On Monday 22 November, ESPNLosAngeles.com reported that the Bruins head coach, Rick Neuheisel, was uncertain about Chow’s future with the team.
“I’m going to evaluate everything in our program at the end of the finish line. I’m not making any assumptions or assertions as to what I have to decide at the conclusion of the season,” Neuheisel said, according to the website.
The Bruins have struggled with their offence all season long, as their total production ranks 111th out of 120 FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) teams. That’s surprising, considering the fact that Chow, who has coached a trio of Heisman Trophy-winning play-callers
over the course of his career, is thought to be one of the most prolific minds in football.
And, although Chow expressed his desire to return to the Bruins’ coaching staff next season, he remains realistic, aware that this year’s poor performance could adversely affect his job security.
“I’m a big guy,” Chow told the website. “I’ve been around this business a long time. I’ve been fired before. It’s part of the deal. Obviously it’s something he’s thinking through. That’s his prerogative as a head coach.”
Still, Neuheisel hesitated to even begin talking about firings with two games left in the Bruins’ regular-season. Should they win their next two match-ups against the Arizona State Sun Devils and the University of Southern California Trojans, UCLA would finish
their regular-season at .500, making them bowl eligible.
However, it remains to be seen whether or not the two-year deal’s approval secures Chow’s spot on the Bruins’ coaching staff next season.
