Question:

Nudity in a college film class?

So I'm in a film class, and our final projects (a film - a love story - from 30-40 minutes long that we direct) are due in 2 weeks. I have everything shot, I'm just doing editing and stuff. A good friend of mine plays the main character in the movie, and it involves some brief nudity, and I was wondering if it would be inappropriate for class. She is 100% ok with it, but i just want to make sure its tasteful enough to go in the film. As far as I'm aware, nudity is fine in our pictures as long as it is "tasteful". its only a few seconds, and this is all there would be. (it then shows the birds outside) Let me know what you think. A particular area of concern is when she leans forward at the end of the first shot. I don't know if the debussy on this version is the piece I'll use, but it will be something similar. (note: please do not view if you are under 18 or easily offended by nudity).

  1. I don't think that your professor or anyone else in class would actually be offended by it, or find it inappropriate. However, if you think that your teacher is excessively formal or prudish, the best decision might be for you to ask him or her in advance. So that, at the very least, your prof isn't completely caught by surprise if there is a situation where the video is shown during class.

If we want to get technical about this, artistic nudity is a form of expression that is protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution. The clip would have to have been utterly without value, artistic or otherwise, for it to be classified as "obscene." Clearly, that is not the case. I thought that the clip was tastefully shot.

Your friend is stunning, by the way.

  2. wow she is hot i reckon thatll be fine to put in your movie good camera skills

  3. She's hott. And yeah, the nudity seems tasteful.

  4. Seems tasteful.  Definitely doesn't seem pornographic, at least.

  5. I would think it would be acceptable.  Nice looking young lady.  Hope she has some scenes with clothes on as well.

The scene, by and large is tasteful, and is not in any way pornographic.  The forward leaning shot doesn't actually reveal anything, so I would say if you are comfortable with it and if your class instructor or professor is reasonable about nudity you should have no problem.

In her scenes where she is clothed, you should continue to strive to be tasteful.  Clothing can often be more suggestive than nudity.

Good luck to you.  I do like the way she moves in this scene, by the way--if it is reflective of the entire film it should be a quality production.
