Oil burner?

just had my boiler serviced and whilst the man was cleaning it out in with all the black soot was what looked loike gold these were flakey pieces he didnt know what they were, have you any ideas????

i would say the boiler has not been serviced in years as we have recently moved in and it was kicking out black soot and the chimney was bellowing black smaoke!!

When burning clean and slightly over aired a pressure jet oil burner will produce a form of sulphur which collects on the baffles and heat exchanger. After normal use the fan starts to get clogged with dirt/fluff/dust, this changes the mixture and it will then start to burn dirty(sooty) this can also occur when nozzles become worn or partially blocked.

Thats why on a service the fan and air inlet, should be cleaned, not a bad idea to replace nozzle .Too many other things to list for full service :)
