Oil change question?

i have a 2005 chevrolet cobalt coupe ls...on the oil cap and in the manual it says use 5w30...so does that mean i shouldnt use synthetic or can i still try it???

yes you can use any type of oil you want just don't mix two different types and make sure your weight is 5W-30 although you can use a different weight like 10W-30 or something if you wanted to but I wouldn't recommend it.

You can use synthetic if youd like . just dont mix regular and sythetic oils together and use the right grade 5w30

If the range equals or exceeds the "5W-30", you should be okay.  That oil would meet the "5W-30" viscosity specs.  So 0W-30 and 5W-50 would work, but not "10W-50" (except in conditions the manual indicates 10W oil is acceptable).

For dino oils, it is generally best to follow the recommendation, because a wider range dino oil does not have quite the same lubricity.

Synthetic oil will make it easier to start the car in winter.  Synthetic handles harsh conditions such as short trips better.  Non-turbo Chevys don't tend to build sludge, so synthetic oil isn't needed for sludge prevention.  Synthetics tend to extend turbo life, but an '05 Cobalt doesn't have one.  Other than that, it probably isn't worth the extra cost, although theoretically, synthetic oil will give slightly better fuel efficiency.

5w30 is the WEIGHT of the oil not type...synthetic is ok to use

Just use any 5w30.

Yes, it's ok. In fact you would be doing your engine a favor.  Go with a full Synthetic! Don't go with those partial synthetic oils. Mobil 1 and Amsoil are great brands.
