Question

when would an observer on earth see the moon in phase and positions in the sky..

1. full moon in highest position in sku

2. first quarter moon at moonrise

3. 3rd quarter moon at highest point in sky

4, first quarter mooon at moonset

5. fullmoon at moonrise

and match them with the answers.

Get a ball and a (working) lamp and go into a dark room. Pretend that your head is the earth, the ball is the moon, and the light is the sun.

If you are facing directly at the lamp it is noon, if it is at your left it is morning, to your right evening, and directly behind you midnight. (You can slowly turn to your left to simulate days going by.)

Hold the ball at the end of your hand directly in front of you.(Holding the ball in front of you represents the moon at its highest point in the sky) As your turn slowly to your left watch how the light from the lamp illuminates the ball. Having done that, what "time of day" was it when the ball looked like a full moon?

Hold the ball out to your left to see what it looks like at moonrise, and to your right to see it at moonset. The first quater moon is illuminated on the right half, the 3rd quater moon is illuminated on the left half.

If you go do this you will quickly understand the relationship between what phase of the moon you see and the position of the earth, moon, and sun.

(Be careful that you don't simulate any eclipses! Hold the ball such that it is not directly in line with your eyes and the lamp!)

The motions here are not accurate! But the light patterns are the same things that cause day/nigh and the phases of the moon.

Sorry,  You really should have opened a book or checked the net.  You still have time to research lunar phases and get a baseline time.  You could impress your teacher by noting that we apply a different clock when dealing with objects such as this.  GMT may be most popular.

im in college and just took this class. number one is 12am number two is 6pm number three is 6am and number four is 12pm oh and the last one is 6pm.
