Omigod . . . . college?

so im gonna be a senior in high school this year. which means a whole lot of looking around for colleges and financial aid and all that other stuff. but i am super confused. where do i even begin to look for financial aid? do i just type it in? or do schools have it? and when are you supposed to start applying to colleges? oh man. anyone with any advice or helpful stories...anything? help!

First, you need to start deciding what you'd like to do. Go to your guidance office and look through books of careers. Once you pick a career or two, see what major(s) and degree(s) are required to get into that career field. Once you've selected a major or two, look through another book that tells you which schools offer that major. Choose a few local ones, and maybe a few other ones... Do some online research to learn about the school. Once you choose a handful of schools, start visiting them. Get a feel for the campus... Can you picture yourself being there? Last comes the application process. I applied to five schools... Some people apply to one, others apply to ten. It's really up to you.

As far as financial aid goes, fill out a FAFSA the January before you graduate. If you're going to graduate in June of 2009, fill out a FAFSA in January of 2009. This will qualify you for federal aid.

Another source of funding is local scholarships. Go to your guidance office frequently to see if there are any scholarships that your local restaurants/businesses/alumni offer. For example, Burger King, McDonald's, etc.

talk to your high school counselor and look at www.collegeboard.com both are very good resources

Speak with your high school guidance counselor. Knowing what you would like to major in is a good way to start narrowing the college choices.

Some colleges help with financial aid. You need to talk to your guidance counselor about colleges and financial aid information. Look for a good college that is accredited and has high statistics of people graduating. College isn't that bad, if you work hard and keep up with your assignments, it'll go by quickly.
