  1. my family, well we moved to england and we decided to rent off base though im sure its tons cheaper to live in a house on base. u will also get a housing allowence or something like that that can help u pay to rent a house off base. and np if u dont have the house yet when u move there bc u will get to live in TLF (temporary living facilities) on base until u find a house. every base ive moved to they have a TLF

                      hope i helped :)

  2. It depends on many factors. Base housing is more cheaper because you don't have to pay rent, water or electricity but you don't receive basic allowance for housing. The basic allowance for housing rate varies from location to location. The command will more than likely send you to base lodging which handles all issues dealing with that. If I'm not mistaken, that is usually worked out during the change of duty stations.

  3. It depends on where you are moving overseas. What country are you moving to?

I would stay on base until you can find something off base. Its better to look in person.

Then again base housing rules in Iwakuni and Okinawa suck. My friend got in trouble because she didnt mow her lawn. She couldnt mow her lawn because she was pregnant and on bed rest. She was Dual Military but her husband was sent elsewhere.

Yeah it sucks living on base there. If you can find a place off base go for it!

  4. you cannot buy in Japan.  Renting is limited to your OHA..and you will only get your actual rent,

for instance, ours as an O1(at the time ) was Y$190,000.  we had found a place for Y$185,000.  we would only have gotten the 185.  we ended up in base housing instead( long story and we got d**n lucky..but spend the longest 86 days of of my life in the Lodge)

it is SOO not cheaper to live off base.  that's why the waiting lists to get on base can be very long.  The housing office has people there who will help you find off base rental units if necessary.

you cannot bring a car over with you.  you will have to buy a beater when you get there.

  5. Housing on Base is free of charge. Just be sure to KEEP IT CLEAN AND NEAT at all times. They are VERY picky.

Prefferably you should live off base as they'll give you a housing allowance, etc. Plus regular pay.

But more than likely you will have to live on base for a little while.

    Good luck to you!
