My husband and I are seriously thinking about taking a year or two to travel and see the country, with our two girls (in a year or so) Has anyone traveled and homeschooled? Any suggestions on good curric. that is easy to pack up and go with? We have so many different books and such now that it would fill up our trunk! (LOL) And, what about residency? Since we still own our home in Maine, we would still just follow Maine homeschool law, even though we were out of the state for a few years?

  1. One of my best friends is "home schooled" she is supposed to be in 9th grade. She has 1 friend her age and is doing 7th grade math. Her parents do not care and buy her four wheelers

" because they feel like it". I think that traveling while doing this would be ever harder.

  2. Hello.  We are a military family who has been on TDY for over two years.  Homeschool was the ONLY way to keep the kids continuing education.  Without being residence of a state as in spending more than 6 months a year in one place.. you don't have any requirements that I am aware of meeting...  We did it on the fly.  We used HOrizons from Alpha and Omega.  We visited every national park or state park and the visitors center we were near and also did science museums, hands on museums etc.  Legally I can't say that you have follow Maines requirements because you won't technically be living there full time.  IF you own houses in georgia and florida does that mean you have to follow their homeschool laws?  I hate to say it, but we were not accountable to anyone excdet God and our children during our two years travel of the US.  We went coast to coast three times in two years following my husband.  We did not given an intent to anyone since we were not at one place longer than a month or so.  Hope this helps give you some confidence, but unless someone has a vindetta against you, no one will even notice what you are doing.  I would give the answer such as "contact the Maine State Education Board to get the legal answer" but I don't think it matters.  Residency is NOT just owning a house.  It also means LIVING there more than 6 months ( 6 months 1 day) a year.    HOpe this helps... YOU CAN DO IT...we did it and are a year ahead!  WOOHOO

  3. Look in yahoo groups for a group called families on the road (fotr) which is exactly that: families full-timing in an RV and homeschooling.  We plan on doing that in the near future.  We have the RV and have taken some trips, but want to take an extended trip.  My kids are already homeschooled.
