On tipping in restaurants?

Question

I know you should tip between 15-20 percent. that's good.

but I know there's this easy method of calculating.

something about the tax. multpling by 4 is it?

just to make it easy.

I move the decimal place to the left one space, and then double whatever that is. That gives you 20%. 20% is the tip I give to a server that sucks. I never tip less than that. 15% is not a good tip! The server still has to tip out various other people who work in the resteraunt. This could be busboys, hostesses, bartenders, foodrunners or whoever. If you ever stiff a server or leave them a really bad tip that means they basically paid out money to wait on you.

Here's what I do....

Say the bill is 43.17.

I move the decimal over one place... 4.17 (This is 10%).

Then, I round to the nearest dollar and multiply by two.. 4 x 2 = 8.

This is the minimum I tip, I usually add a bit more for good service.

Well, in NY (Erie County) you double it, because our tax rate is 8.75%, so when you double it, it's 17.5%, which is between 15-20%.  

If your tax rate is between 4 and 5 %, then yes, multiplying by 4 is good.

Figure out your tax rate and divide it into 15-20%.

2x for cali.  Will get you 16% so your considered the miser that just straddled the 15% line but your not spurling by tipping 20%

calculating the tip is super easy! You just move a decimal place to the left (10%); move a decimal place left and add half (15%); or move the decimal once to the left and double (20%)

move the decimal one spot to the left BEFORE TAX, double the answer for a fair tip, do not "tip on tax" - that is unfair to the patrons - example, the bill is $47.00 - move the decimal one spot to the left ($4.70) and double that ($9.40) - add $9.40 to the total bill which includes tax ($56.40 plus tax), but I usually round up and add a few extra dollars for excellent service.

I'm not so sure this idea works anymore.  It used to be that we "doubled" the tax, but it doesn't seem to work anymore.  

I think certain items are taxed now, while others are not.  Maybe alcohol is / isn't???

My figure is that if you want to tip the full 20%, you basically have to figure a $1 tip for each $5 of the bill.

So $25 bill would be.......$5 !!!!

Don't know about that formula but servers should get at least $1.00 per customer, if it is good service by boyfriend and I leave 5.00  but 15 to 20 is a good tip.  I know that $50.00 bill at 10% would be 5.00 and half of 5.00 is 2.50 and I add that together I get what 15% would be (take 10% then half of 10 is 5, 10 and 5 make 15%)

most servers make 2.13 an hr. plus tips  when minim. wage was 4.25 their boss paid them 2.13 the server has to make at least 2.13 on their own, when it went up to 5.25  the boss paid 2.13 they had to make 3.02 now 5.85 min. wage the boss still pays 2.13 they have to make and claim 3.72 an hr. so every time they lose money, customers think they make more and they don't, when min. wage goes to $20.00 an hr. boss will still only pay the 2.13 so they have to work harder and make less.  I used to be server. No money in it. unless there are a lot of customers, slow day the boss kicks in the rest of the money to min. wage, but if server doesn't make it all the time the boss says they have to claim the rest, take a loss because the boss don't want to pay it.  So most servers don't want to be moved to another job like cashier so if they don't overall for the week make the min. wage they claim extra.

take the first number (6) which would be %10 and multiply by 2 to get %20 which would be around $12 in tip...

Uh, that would depend on the sales tax rate where you live. Each State is different, and Delaware has no state sales tax, so the tip would be 4% of zero.
