Question:

One legged biking?

Does anyone know of any devices on the market for one legged biking. I have trouble keeping balance and using both legs. Is there any adaptions out to allow just one side the pedal the bike?

Between the price of gas and the need to stay in shape I want to get back to biking.

  1. Hi...your question got me curious so I just searched google and found some links that might be helpful to you.   Like the other poster said, I've also seen amputee cyclists in photos, so there has to be something out there for you.

    Check these links out:

Type in "cycling prosthetics" and you'll find loads of interesting articles.  Some of them are really inspiring, too!  People have competed in full Ironman triathalons and in the Olympics with special adaptations.

If you have enough balance with one leg hanging free (and if it won't bother your back muscles too much), you could remove the crankarm from one side of the bike, possibly even having some sort of bracket made for the bike that you could rest that leg on.   In one article addressing the special balance needs of lower-leg amputees, it suggested that raising the handlebars higher can help.

Good luck....I hope you can make something work so you can enjoy riding!   I think that's just awesome.   :o)

  2. you can get shoes with clips on them that click on the pedal so you can push and pull to go along and you just twist your foot to un clip them or you could even get pedals with straps on them there slightly cheaper but they may not work as well you can get them from either bike stores or good shoe stores

  3. i would say that you should get a electric bike instead that is the best one i can say or if there is any automatic return pedals that would be cool

one idea i can think of is installing a huge piece of magnet on the pedal the bottom of the pedal and install a metal or another magnet on your shoe well tape it or insert it inside

and get a bicycle that is geared that means it can go without needing too much push and no back pedal ones

then when you pedal dont pedal all the way go forward backward all the time if i can i will make a video of a example for you

and i think it wont cost you alot of money you will just need a normal bicycle or one of those 3 wheeled adult bikes to easily balance i know there isnt any in the market but you can make one easily

i actually also seen a person with bike that you just push on because you are pushing the front wheel but and you put force on the bottom to push it but ill try to see if i can ask if he sells his bikes

  4. clipless pedals allow for a more cirular motion of your pedal stroke. to pedal with just one leg, use your quad to power down, and your hamstring to pull back up. also, there are ways to connect prosthesis, I've seen articles on amputees in bicycling magazine, but they never say where riders get their equipment. try writing a letter to Bicycling's editor for info. keep pedaling!

  5. I don't have an answer but just wanted to say I think it's awesome that you are still biking and looking into ways to make it a part of your life. Best of luck. -Adam

  6. Shimano makes a quick release pedal that's a little safer than a stirrup.
