Opinions Needed! =)?

Question

I have to do a "opinionated paper" for my Sociology class stating whether or not I agree with something. However, I can't think of a subject that is Sociology related that I can talk about. My teacher said no papers about smoking or abortion because he gets several of those each class. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking about doing drinking and driving but duh... most people that don't drink and drive agree that drinking and driving should be against the rules! I also was going to write about s*x before marriage but I am not sure what side I would choose. lol

Sure I have a very controversial socialogical topic that is a current concern that you could do a bit of research on that would also keep your attention while you do it.

I hate boring papers about boring same old topics.

You could do a paper about this:

TOPIC:  The role of the mentally ill in society

The role of the mentally ill in society has changed over the years.  I would structure the paper in a few different sections.

The first section would be a sort of an opening concerning laws and how they have changed in your current state dealing with the mentally ill.  The laws have changed dramatically over the years.  With better understanding of psychological disorders, and the reality that mental institutions were becoming overwhelmed....many people whom in the past would have been institutionalized for life....are now out living in society.  

You could speak about what support systems they have, challenges they face, the challeges they represent to the society and whether society is ready for this or not, and what if any changes need to be made to make the new systems better.

*Discuss the problem of the 'med-controlled' patient that is non complient with taking medications.

*Discuss the difficulties related to employing this person and what organizations/government agencies are there to support them.

*Discuss the contribution that it makes to society to make the mentally ill productive members of society, rather than having society totally supporting them in an instutional setting.

Perhaps find someone who struggles with a mental/psychological problem with whom you could interview.....(keep their identity confidential...if their name is John Doe...refer to them as J.D....or D.J.)    

Any disorder would do... schitzophrenia or bi-polar are are probably the best ones to choose from because these people were typically institutionalized in the past.

Talk to them about their struggles in getting adequate medical care, employment, finding a mate, maintaining a marriage, dealing with their families, their children, how society percieves them, what they hope for in the future, their positive and negative experiences in the past as it relates to their mental illness, what the 'drugs' they take to manage their disorder make them feel like, and what they feel like when they are 'off' the drugs.  

This could be a long and interesting paper....and one that really needs to be written.
