Origin/meaning of Hungarian Jewish surname "Schatteles(z)".?

This name comes from the Mako region in Hungary and can be traced back before 1850.

  1. I looked and could not find a meaning for the name. I even tried babelfish to see if the name would translate from German.   Could it possibly have been misspelled at some time? Maybe one of the gurus here can find something.


  2. There's nothing even close to it in Hungarian, so this has to be a German name. The closest I find in the German surname book are Schatt, which is a Northern German name for a moneylender (from a Middle Low German word meaning 'treasure, money'), and Schättle, a Swabian name for someone living in a shady place. From a cultural perspective the first looks more likely, while geographically the second seems more probable.
