I'm organzing an surprise Oscar themed party for my sister (She'll be 30) with her husband and I'm in charge of food. What sort of food should I serve? It will be on a buffet and feeding around 60 guests.

Thanks

  1. I have done this.  first get all the food they serve in the movies.  Popcorn, raisinettes, Dots, etc.  Then think of some of the nominated movies and make dishes that connect.  For instance if a movie takes place in Italy, make something italian.  The year that Brokeback Mountain was nominated, I made Shepherd's Pie, because the main characters were sheep ranchers.  Also, go to some of the big recipe websites like Allrecipes dot com, and Recipezaar dot com. and browse around for special occasion menus, they usually have some fun oscar party menus to suggest.  Also, go online looking for party goods (plates, hats, etc.) because the Oscars are in March or April I think, you will not find those things in the stores now, but you will be able to purchase oscar themed party goods online.  Good Luck and I will wait for my invitation in the mail!  LOL!!

  2. For an Oscar-themed party, try elegant food choices. A cheese tray accompanied by fresh and dried fruits, nuts, pickles and cured meats are a hit, along with unusual mustards, chutneys, honey or infused oil. You can also make your own crostini by slicing up a baguette, brush with oil, sprinkle with a little coarse salt and crisp up in a 400-degree oven for 8-10 minutes, until browned. Serve with a yummy hot crab and artichoke dip or a creamy garlic spread made with garlic, olive oil, butter, cream cheese, thyme and rosemary. If you have some puff pastry dough, you can make a whole host of finger foods. Spread the dough with pesto and sprinkle with grated cheese, then fold over the edges to form a rustic tart. Other simple toppings, such as sun-dried tomatoes, roasted peppers or olives, would also be delicious. Bake for 10 minutes in a 400-degree oven, and the result is a real crowd pleaser. Or press grated cheese, sesame seeds, herbs or spices into a sheet of puff pastry dough. Cut the dough into strips, twist each strip and bake at 450 degrees for about 10 minutes to make elegant straws. These look nice served in a tall vase or pitcher. Asparagus wrapped in prosciutto and zucchini pancakes are good "finger foods" as well. A really chic idea is a calypso shrimp cocktail. Just grill seasoned shrimp on skewers and serve in little glasses on top of a bed of fresh greens and cherry tomatoes. If main dishes are more your style, serve mini beef wellingtons, beef tenderloin with mashed sweet potatoes and roasted Brussel sprouts, sausage and pepper smothered steak (flank steak, onions, sausage and sweet peppers) or cherry chicken roll ups (stuffed with mascarpone cheese, cream cheese, cherries and brown sugar). Chocolate or cheese fondue works, too. If children will be at the party, try serving a buffalo chicken pizza or cheesy gourmet popcorn. Don't forget a signature drink of the night.
