Question:

Oven shorting out?

Every time I turn my oven on, after a few seconds it trips the GFCI. I have tried plugging it in to another outlet and the same thing happens which tells me that there is possibly an issue with the oven. This started happening after I did a self clean. Any suggestions? The burners work on top, just the oven doesn't work. This is a gas oven.

  1. Check the power cord  from plug to terminal where it hooks up to stove especially where it goes through any metal. Be sure its unplugged while inspecting. Then check the ignighter to make sure you don't have some foreign matter causing it to short out. Then hook up to a no gfci to see if it trips that breaker . Gfci's can go bad. Good luck

  2. get a new one!

  3. I have had this issue before.  Sometimes when an ignitor goes bad or is going bad it will trip the GFI.  try using an extention cord to plug it in to a non GFI circuit. this may tell you if that is the issue.  Please don't use an extention cord as a permanent fix. call a repairman and get it replaced.

  4. They get REAL hot in the self clean. It sounds like you have a melted wire someplace that is contacting the body of the oven.

Since it is gas, only the oven, and not immediate, it is likely a wire to a safety or one connecting to the gas valve. It could also be a bad ignitor that has broken and a piece of it is touching the shield. Possible it is a grounded gas valve but that is unlikely.

Sorry but for the most part the only good way to find it is to put an ohm meter on it and start checking for continuity to ground.

You might start tearing it apart and checking wiring visually looking for one melted. It is most likely where a wire goes through a metal panel.  I would inspect the ignitor too.

But a meter is best for chasing down a short.

Not really a consumer's project. I have had a tear some down rather far apart to get to a melted wire.

    Good Luck.
