Question:

Overhand serving a volleyball?

I'm confused as to where to hit it.

I've heard you hit it with the center of your hand at the center of the ball.

Other people say use your palm? Whenever I use my palm it seems to go downward before hitting the net. Should I be hitting it sooner when the ball is higher in the air?

I need to master this fast i have 3 days until J.O tryouts.

  1. what i do is a make a fist iwht my left hand(cuz im a lefty with right of your a righty)and then i hole the volley ball eiht my other hand and i take my fist and swing back and forth to practice without touvhing the ball and wen the ref blows the whistle i punch the ball as hard as i can.....also to help from the ball goin out i serve in the middle of the line .....make sure ur foot doesnt go over the line

  2. when i was younger i had the same problem until i finally mastered it..heres how i learned:

    1. you need to practice your toss like everyone is telling you..before you even practice serving the ball, just practice getting a consistent toss.you can do that at home. the toss should not be too high or too low until youve mastered the serve.

    2. SEE the ball.hit it before it is on the same level as the net. dont contact it too early or too late. too early: too high too late:too low..

    3. step into the ball. step into your serve.footwork is important.you do not need to take 5 steps. if youre a righty, you you step into it with your right leg and if youre a lefty, left leg

    4. the most important t hing is that all your power comes from your waist. im serious. i go to one of the smartest schools in the country and weve studied that ITS ALL IN YOUR WAIST! believe me.your arm strength isnt half as important as the way you move your waist. ROTATE YOUR WAIST when contacting the ball

    5. FOLLOW THROUGH..dont just hit the ball and stop your arm.

    6. Keep your opposite arm up to keep yur hitting arm in control

    7. keep your hand firm and open

    hope it helps

  3. here's what i do:

    -keep left foot forward

-keep toss low enough to where you dont have to reach for it (like if you put your hand up in the air, your toss is right at your hand)

-practice tossing it and letting it fall like right at the tips of your left foot

-i tend to hold the ball with the emblem facing me

-try to hit the emblem with the part where your fingers meet the palm of your hand

-kind of do a crunch motion with your abs when you hit it for more power

    -follow through

  4. I think you are talking about regular serving not jump serving. To get the best serve you need to serve a "floater" to do this you need to pracitice.  If you are right handed hold the ball with your leftf arm out and in front of your right shoulder. Make sure the ball has the nozzle right in the middle. This will be your target for your hand to hit. You dont need to toss it very high but hit it hard with your right hand using only your palm. Swing hard to make good contact but dont allow your arm or wrist to follow through. This will make the ball float back and fourth in the air which is much tougher to pass. When hit correctly. You need to make sure that you hit it directly with only your palm and the nozzle being in the middle of your hand with no follow through from either your arm or wrist.

  5. ok well u  need to make sure your getting a high enough toss because that could be part of the reason why its going downward. when u put ur right hand (or if ur a lefty than ur left hand) in the air as high as it can go, ur toss should be one ball length higher then as high as ur hand can go without jumping or going on ur tippy toes (this is also called ur reach) u need to hit the ball in the middle of ur hand atthe middle of the ball. make sure u swing straight and follow through or else the ball will go straight or out. make sure u folow through because if u just let ur hand stop then the ball wont have enough power and wil fall short. have a firm hand as well and make sure ur hand is open (dont have ur hand in a fist or have all ur fingers stuck to each other)

  6. it all has to do with the toss. you have to get a nice high toss so you can hit it over. not too high though. but before you do it (if you're right handed) hold the ball out in front of you with your left hamd and put your right hand sorta on top of the ball. when you toss the ball your arm should be traied to go to the same spot on the ball once you hit it. you dont want to hit it right behind the ball because it'll just go straight and out of bound once its over the night. you want to hit on top of the ball a weee bit. i hope this helps.

  7. you need to probly get a higher toss and when you go to hit it make sure you fallow threw with your arm so then it goes father

  8. It is usually at the bottom of your palm. If you hit it i a fist it can really damage your fingers. You should be focusing on the throw. If you dont concentrate at when you hit the ball it will go in plans to dont intend. I suggest starting out with softballs(volleyballs) to harder ones everyday. If you need more help ask a friend who has already "mastered" overhand serving.

And good luck on your tryouts.

  9. i use my wrist... maybe u should throw it higher
