PGDE or CELTA?

i am planning to work as an english teacher in the UK. I am thinking of doing CELTA or PGDE. Now it seems that PGDE (ESOL) would be better, but I do have some doubts. Which one is better? And which one is usually asked for? Or rather - which one offers better career prospects?

I agree with Lou. CELTA or TEFLA are the two recognised worlwide.

If you want to teach within a state school you would need a PGCE. For work in language schools a CELTA (or equivalent) may get you a job but in the long term for career progression you would need a DELTA or MA specialising in ELT.

Are you a teacher or do you have experience teaching english as a foreign language?

The CELTA qualification is the first stage in teaching english as a foreign language. You can continue to DELTA or Skills for Life, you would have teacher status but only allowed to work with adults, children after school at colleges and at the students homes.

PGCE is usually taken in addition to a degree to qualify you as teacher that can work in mainstream schools.

I would recommend CELTA it is widely recognised and here in Ireland I've never heard of PDGE.
