use my Dell PC for gaming.

Specs

Dell dimension 4700

Intel P4 2.80ghz

2gb ram PC3200+

8500 GT - soon to get ati HD3870

I think the processor is slow, and have seen some 3.4ghz and 3.8 p4 processors. Would they fit in my mobo? ex.http://cgi.ebay.com/Intel-Pentium-4-P4-3-8-GHZ-670-2MB-800FSB-LGA-775-HT_W0QQitemZ370080251606QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item370080251606&_trkparms=72%3A552|39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Would i need to change voltages inorder to get a faster processor?(Dell PC's voltage and fsb is locked)

If possible to upgrade, would i see a noticeable difference?

Thanks in advance

  1. It should, since all P4's are the same socket type. But, you might need to give it more power, since they have some serious over clocking in place.

  2. Hi Ducky,

Since you're using a Dell PC, you're out of luck. Like you stated yourself, the voltage and FSB options are locked. And also, you wouldn't see THAT much of a difference in games with the newer processor.

My suggestion to you is to buy a nicer video card, since you have a PCi Express x16 slot, and overclock it to see a tremendous performance boost in your games.

For Nvidia cards, use RivaTuner - http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=riv...

For ATI cards, use ATITool - http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/

Also, don't forget proper VGA cooling if you're going to overclock your video card into the next dimension ;)

    Good Luck!
