PSP custom firmware?

I have a Fat PSP with firmware V. 3.95. I would like to get all the cool themes such as AppleCor, and the programs that require it, such as the Universal Remote hack. All the instructions i found online to get custom firmware are too complicated and require me to buy stuff. What do i have to do, in simplest terms?

  1. 1) GEt a Pandora's battery.

    2) Downgrade to 1.5 with it.

    3)Install the custom firmware.
