Paddle Shifters?

To my understanding sport cars with paddle shifters doesnt require a person to step on the clutch each time to change the gear, but why there is still a clutch paddle below if you dont need it?? Whats the purpose of it being there? Jus curious.

  2. You don't need a clutch between gears (sequentially) while moving . But.. You need it to start out  and to shift out of sequence.  Also for reverse.
