Question:

Painting walls red! Yikes!?

Any advice on painting walls red? It's a medium red color.

I did the gray primer, and we tried using the up and down method - versus the W or M methods... but the roller left paint lines on either sides of the roller.

we've done 2 coats and it looks ... ok... but I want it to look as good as possible without us having to buy more paint for more coats... so any advice is appreciated. :D

TIA.

  1. Red is a very hard colour to look good on walls... any rich pigmented colour is.  Sorry, but you need another coat or two for it two look the way you want.  I would have used a tinted primer versus a grey primer, that may have helped avoid so many coats of red.  You're applying it correctly... it just the colour... you need several coats.

  2. I am a 37 year experienced painter..This issue is quite simple..alot of people use cheap roller frames and covers, then on top of that when they roll they put pressure on thier roller to make the paint go further..this is called "dry rolling'....After a couple of minutes of this the inner frame(the cage part) of the roller collapses some and the roller cover then does not fit as snug as it should, plus you are flaring out the edges of the roller cover...Get a better roller frame with a stout "cage" ..a more expensive roller cover..(which will drip alot less paint)..I prefer lambskin covers...dip the roller in your paint..and slightly "pan off" the excess..and roll on the wall..do not use no pressure rolling the paint on the wall..very very slight..if the paint gets light..DO NOT PRESS ON THE ROLLER FRAME ANY HARDER...dip it back into your paint and repeat...after you cover about 4 feet of wall space from floor to ceiling..take your roller and gently lay it at the beginiing where you started opainting in the corner..lay the cover at top..with the "heel" facing to the dry part of the wall..let the roller fall from ceiling to floor without any pressure to pull the lines out,...Your roller should be dry when you do this do not dip in paint...overlap the previous "drop rolled" are with the roller and let it roll to the floor again..do the whole 4 foot..then roll out another 4 feet..and do the same....The chep roller frame and cover, plus applying pressure on them is your main problem here..do not "dry roll"..it makes lines...

  3. Reds and darker colors are hard because of the amount of pigment in them, it makes them more transparent. I would of suggested a primer tinted to match the red, not grey. It will most likely take 3 or 4 coats to give it a good even color, and the W/M method would of worked better because now you will still have over lap lines.

  4. make a wavy pattern going from up to down, like a slight wriggle using your wrist Or you can use the splodge effect where you just dab the brush on the wall, that looks best! And the red will look better if it where darker and crimson-y like a romanic red that looks cool and if your painting all walls in the room then paint one red and the rest cream ;D

  5. i've got no idea about painting, but good luck. nice colour choice, i like it. Make sure you get some black furniture. it's so hot right now. lol. just good luck with everything.

  6. Red normally takes more than 2 coats. Sounds like your putting to much paint on the roller or your pressing too hard. Also be sure your nap is the correct thickness for the wall surface>1/4 or 3/8".

I prefer the n or m motion but I over lap the lines once as I go back over the "letters". Once the paint is applied, let it set, and keep moving to the rest of the area. When one section is done, Let it dry completely. Then do another coat and repeat for a total of 3 coats. Red is tricky. You just have to be patient.

  7. Red is really difficult. With regular red paint you might need four or five coats to get good coverage. Yes, you will get the lines from the roller because two coats simply isn't enough to cover opaquely.

I'm at the point that I wouldn't paint again in red unless I used Benjamin Moore Aura. I keep shilling that paint to everyone I know because it does cover so well even without a primer.

  8.      Your color choice is O.K. but, you have to go two ways with any color, not just one way. Up and down then back and forth. It also sounds like your paint is a little heavy, maybe thin it  some.
