Obviously Paper!!.....Since Paper can be easily recycled than plastic. Moreover paper is eco-frndly. While plastic is a ill substance

As both can be recycled it shouldn't be a problem.

However, many plastic products are made from different plastics, so at the moment it's a nightmare to sort them.

In comparison, paper falls into 2 groups - white/good quality and brown- cardboard.

In the UK, many councils are only recycling plastic bottles. All other cartons go to landfill.

These bottles are sorted locally - mainly to remove foreign matter, then sent by lorry 100's of miles to collection points.

They are then compacted and bailed, and exported to China - where labour is cheap and there is a high demand for plastic feedstock. When chipped for reuse it is made into products we buy again.

Conditions in China are very bad where this happens, and is causing major river and air pollution along the yellow and yanktze rivers.

So, untill we can get our own industry up to speed recycling our own waste - I'll stick to paper.

The most environmentally friendly is to bring your own reusable bag (i.e. canvas bag).

If you can't or won't, then it depends.

Paper bags require more energy to produce and trees to be cut down, but are easily recyclable.

Plastic bags require less energy to produce, but are not recyclable.  They are reusable for other applications, but only if your area has a specific plastic grocery bag recycling program (every retail store in California is now required by law to have one, for example).

So from most to least environmentally friendly:

1) Bring canvas bag(s)

2) Plastic if there's a specific recycling program

3) Paper

4) Plastic if there's no recycling program

Since both can be recycled, I'm cool with both. Haven't heard anything if one is preferred or not. Maybe, it should be wider known on the differences?

Paper.  It comes from a renewable resource and it is biodegradable.

Everyone just assumes paper is better but it takes more energy and resource to make a paper bag and if you just don't litter your plastic bag, then it is OK. Both can be recycled.

But the most environmentally friendly way to go is NO BAG. Use a canvas bag that you bring from home and use over and over if you really care about this issue. My local market sells such bags at the checkout stand and I could just buy another one any time I needed it. But I have never seen anybody buy one or use one. I myself don't use them. I sometimes use paper and sometimes plastic. I use them for waste basket liners instead of buying plastic trash can liners.
