I have two parakeets. One is a male one is a female. Today I put in a nesting box. The female was biting the hole making it bigger and she also went inside it. Is she going to lay eggs. They are a bonded pair. I have seen them mating once. But also i havent been at home for about 2 weeks so they could have mated during that time,

  1. So far, so good.

  2. everything sounds like it is going well....just wait and check the nesting box every once in a wh ile to see if the babies are here!

  3. Everything is going fine so far.

Here is a little more info:

Budgerigars most easily breed in captivity when provided with a nest box. Female budgerigars can lay eggs without a male partner but these eggs are unfertilized and will not hatch.  A female budgie will lay her eggs on alternate days.  After the first one, there is usually a two-day gap until the next. She will usually lay between four to eight eggs, which she will incubate (usually starting after laying her 2nd or 3rd) for about 21 days each.  Budgerigar Parakeet hens only leave their nests for very quick defecations and stretches once they've begun incubating and are by then almost exclusively fed by their c***s (usually at the nest's entrance).  Depending on the clutch size and the beginning of incubation, the age difference between the first and last hatchling can be anywhere from 9 to 16 days.

  4. You're pretty lucky that they took right to their box! Usually it takes my breeding pairs a while before they will even get near a nest box. I breed parrotlets. When the birds chew the nest hole and you may see them throw out some shavings, also if you see them going in and out of the box, this is called "working the box" in breeder lingo. Usually one birds start to mate they will do this continuously until they lay. Sometimes once they are done laying (I know my p'lets do it) they will mate for several days after.  Sometimes they will even lay more eggs, this is called "double clutching".

The best advice I can give you- being a breeder- is that no one is going to be able to tell you if your birds will lay or not. In breeding their are so many senerios.  It certainly does sound like your female has an intrest in the nest box, which is always a good start!

  5. Usually 2 parakeets wont breed, well... they might but they will not lay any eggs. even if you see them breed there is only a 60% Chance they will really lay eggs. If they breed non stop for a day or 2 then your Set.

For a normal budgie, 3 days after breeding they will lay there first egg. about 14-18 days later they will hatch in order layed (usually 4-6 and sometimes 8). Commonly only 2-4 will survive.

In you wand to be more successful in breeding get 2 more pair and they will surly lay eggs.

  6. yes everything seems to be going well. But you REALLY shouldn't bred birds. LEAVE it to the EXPERTS!
