Question:

Parakeet Problem!!!????

by  |  earlier

I got my parakeets a few days ago and my male parakeet Merlin [call it merlin when you answer please] won't eat. I don't know why. I don't think he's eaten anything since I brought him home. He has plenty of food and water, but he won't get near it! He always seems scared. I've also never seen him sleep. My female parakeet Aqua [please call her aqua when you answer] eats and sleeps fine. Merlin doesn't seem sick, but I'm still worried. He "tweeps" okay and moves in his cage occasionally, but not too often. Can you help?

Thanks to all who gave a good answer!!!!!

Love,

Ginny

  1. Merlin could have been fed on a all seed diet, which is bad. he will eat the pellets eventually. and make sure they have two of everything!

  2. Check with the breeder or the store where you purchased Merlin and Aqua to see what they were feeding.  Some birds are fed on seeds, others on pelletized food.  New foods may not be familiar to your 'keets.  Or perhaps they are very young and only recently weened from their parents.  You can alway try some greens such as washed, organically grown spinach leaves or other safe greens.  Don't feed greens too often in that they may get loose droppings.

Good luck with your new pets!

  3. When I first got my parakeets one of mine did the same thing Merlin is doing. If he doesn't look sick, he's probably just taking a little longer to adjust. I bought some millet spray and honey treats to get my bird in the eating mood and that did the trick. Good luck!

  4. Merlin is still not blending to the surroundings while Aqua, on the opposite is. Merlin is actually eating when you are not looking or at night. He will sleep eventually when he is tired. Don't worry.
