I absolutely would NOT freak because at age 17, I came to my Mom and spoke with her about this same thing and she freaked and told me not to do it.  Instead, I would take my daughter to the doctor to get on the pill ASAP and if it were my son, I'd lecture him about using a condom EVERY time.  Using the pill (make sure you take it every single day around the same time) and a condom together sounds pretty darn safe.
