Will you tell me in order what you had to do to get your passport together

Example: Something like :

*I went to the post office and I brought my ID, Birth Certificate and Drivers Licence

*I had my photo taken from the Mall

*I went here...

*I did this...

*It took # of weeks to receive my passport/to get it together...

Something like this ^ Just over all what you did and how long it took for you to have your passport ready.

I am 18 from United States and this summer I am getting a passport, I am doing this alone - and I have no clue what I am doing as far as where to go and what I am expected to do and go.

Please explain to me what I will be doing.

  1. Just to add to chattemm's answer:  if you were born to a US serviceman in a foreign country, as I was, you should make sure you also have (along with your birth certificate, which is likely to be written in a foreign language):  1. Proof you were born to a US service person, which your parents should have obtained at the time of your birth, and  2.  Your US citizenship document, which is separate.

If you are in a rush, you can expedite the passport-gaining process by paying an extra fee (I believe $60, not sure).

But  WATCH OUT for companies online that offer to do it for you.  There's no reason to pay any company extra when you can get your passport straight from the US government yourself anyway.

  2. First off, get together all the documents and other stuff that you will be needing to apply for a passport. These are:

-form DS-11, Application for Passport form (you can get this from online, try this link - http://travel.state.gov/passport/forms/d...

NOTE: Please do NOT sign the DS-11 application form until the Passport Acceptance Agent instructs you to do so.

    - your birth certificate (to show proof of your citizenship)

    - your driver's license or a state ID with your photo (to show present proof of identity)

    - 2 passport photos which must follow the guidelines on passport photos (http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/fir... You can have your photo taken at UPS, CVS or Walgreens, any place that offers passport photo services. Make sure it is taken within the past six months.

    - your social security number

If you're applying for the first time, you will have to apply in person. You can go to any post office to submit your application and pay the fees. You might want to check their hours for accepting passport applications so you won't waste time. Follow the instructions they will give you while you submit your application, as well as instructions after.

At present, passport applications are being processed within four weeks time. While waiting for your passport, you can track its status online. Try this link - http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/sta...

There you have it. For more information go to the site below. Hope that helps.
