My fiance and I are getting married in May and then going on a cruise. We have applied for our passports but what I am concerned about is that he will still have 5 months of probation left from a DUI. Will this effect him getting the passport? Thanks for any advice given.

  1. probably will have an effect , he should ask his probation officer for a definitive answer. for sure he wont be able to leave until the probation period is over. However several countries, including Canada will not allow people with any kind of drinking and driving offense into the country with out paying an entry fee. My friend and went to Canada he had an offense 8 years ago..DUI.. and he had to pay an extra 250.00 to enter the country. I wish I could be of more help. check the US customs website

Do you need a passport to cruise?

Travel agents say there's still plenty of confusion over the U.S. State Department's new passport rule, which finally went into effect this week.

What, specifically, does it mean for cruisers? Not all that much -- yet. The new regulation requires anyone who travels BY AIR to the Caribbean, Canada, Mexico and Bermuda to carry a passport (until now U.S. travelers often could get away with a driver's license and birth certificate). But for now, U.S. citizens who travel to those regions by sea are exempt.

That said, the State Department says the rules could be extended to sea travelers as early as Jan. 1, 2008 -- just 11 months away. So cruising regulars who don't have a passport might want to use the delay to get one.

The biggest immediate change from the new rule is for cruisers heading to Alaska. U.S. citizens on one of the many ships departing from Vancouver, British Columbia who fly to the port will now need passports (since they're arriving in and departing from Canada by air). In a quirk of the new rules, those who drive across the Canadian border to the port, however, will not, since land-crossings also are exempt from the new rule.

A cautionary note: While cruisers heading to the Caribbean and Mexico will be able to board ships in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Los Angeles and other U.S. ports without a passport for at least the rest of 2007, industry watchers say it's still a good idea to get one. As the subscription-only industry newsletter Cruise Week pointed out this week, problems could arise in the case of a U.S. passenger without a passport who suddenly had to return home midway through a trip.

Consider the case of someone who sails out of Los Angeles without a passport who falls ill when the ship is at sea and needs to fly home from Acapulco or Cabo San Lucas. "Under the new regulations, it might not be an easy process" when they arrive at customs in the U.S., notes Cruise Week. It's a rare situation, of course, but it does happen from time to time.

One more tidbit: For a U.S. citizen, Puerto Rico is NOT a foreign country (and therefore, you can fly there to pick up a ship without a passport!). Obvious for many, we know, but the U.S. territory, a major departure point for cruises, has struggled with a misperception that it can no longer be visited without a passport. Ditto for the islands of St. Thomas and St. John, two other Caribbean destinations that, as U.S. territories, are open to U.S. visitors without passports.

Need more info? The cruise industry has set up a website, getapassportnow.com, that explains the new rules and requirements for getting a passport.

  3. CnO IDEA BUT CONGRATULATIONS ON THE FORTHCOMING WEDDING AND I WISH YOU ALL THE HAPPINESS IN THE WORLD. GOOD LUCK

  4. The probation for a DUI should not effect him getting a passport.  Delay?  Possible, but if you are traveling on a cruise that starts and ends in the US in the year of 2007 then you will only need his birthcertificate.

  5. I don't see how anything like that can interfere with obtaining a passport, unless he's not allowed to leave the state or something.

  6. no a DUI won't affect it but  domestic violence and other violent acts will stop you from getting a pass port
