  1. Hi Ben,

It is spelled Peace Corps, just like the Marine Corps or the Corps of Engineers. You didn't do as badly as a woman who wrote to me once when I was in Borneo and spelled it "Piece Core", though.

You get to learn a foreign language, see a part of the world few people see, and work 60 hours a week doing something useful. You make life-long friends. If the people you work with practice ritual tattooing, you can get a nifty souvenir; I did. Mine is slightly more meaningful than some others, especially those poor fools who think high-school love will last forever and spend the rest of their lives with "Mary" on their arm even though they are married to Susan.

Read more, if you like. My tattoo story is there:

  2. It is the opportunity to help others.

  3. You get to go to a really cool country and you feel really good about yourself because you're helping people.

  4. Benefits for the Peace Corp member, or benefits for the community in which the member serves?

And if you mean for the member, when you say "benefits", do you mean what sort of stipend, accommodation they can expect? If so, it's on the PeaceCorps web site.

If, by benefits, you mean what does the PC member gain through this service: international experience, management in crisis/high-stress situations, greater awareness of cultural diversity, ability to navigate various bureaucracies successfully, experience in networking among different organizations (local government, other NGOs, etc.), situation assessment, reporting, and program evaluation, all of which is greatly valued by potential employers).
