Happily playing Nintendo with my son when the TV started making a fairly high pitched whine with a slight smell of electronics coming from the unit. Although the TV picture is OK except for a touch of sitortion to the left hand side, the noise is unacceptable. Had a shocking hangover next day and was forced to watch it but the noise from the back of the unit drove the Mrs mad and she made me switch it off.

Undid the back of the unit which was a feat in itself and the noise is coming from a black cylander attached to a mother board. Its about two inches tall and has a large red wire coming from the top which is connected to the top of the picture tube. The red wire has plastic wagon wheels on it which appear to be designed to keep the wire aware from other stuff.

Can this black cylindrical part be replaced or should I just chuck the TV away. It is 54 weeks old and just out of warranty, I live in a Country Town so would need to lug some 100k's to find a tchnician. It only cost $300.

Shall I chuck it or fix it? Should I stop watching TV and get a life?
