Question:

Phone problem with cable service

I have a cable service coming into my house that provides phone, internet and cable. Heres the problem: the guy that installed this service was a real moron. He did such a sloppy job and I almost kicked him out a few times but never did (should have).

Anyway, I have only 1 modem or port station in the whole house, meaining I can really only use 1 phone and hook it up into this modem. The old phone jacks are all around the house (and I want to be able to use these).

I have tried plugging in the phone wire from the modem to a phone jack in another room, and then tried a different phone jack somewhere else i the house and I got really bad reception and interference. Right now, the old phone lines are still hooked up from the telephone pole outside, to the old phone box on the outside of the house. Someone told me to unplug or cut the old phone service going into the outside box, but haven't tried that yet.

I DON'T WANT THOSE CORDLESS PLUG IN PHONES THAT DON'T REQUIRE A PHONE JACK THAT YOU CAN PUT IN DIFFERENT ROOMS.

I WANT TO BE ABLE TO STILL USE MY EXISTING PHONE JACKS THAT ARE IN BASICALLY EVERY ROOM IN THE HOUSE.

  1. You are going to need to disconnect the old phone (landline) service coming into the old phone box.  That connection is interfering with the cable internet phone (VOIP) when you connect it to any of the phone jacks within your home.  You can only use one of the two (landline or VOIP) with your phone jacks.

I'm surprised that your installer didn't tell you that, but you need to know that the cable company IS NOT A PHONE COMPANY and you will need to troubleshoot and solve any problems you might have within your home's wiring.  The only thing that most cable companies will help you with is making sure that there is a dial tone coming out of the cable company's voice terminal (What you termed the modem).

  2. Mr.Nix is correct.  The Cable company is not responsible for any telephone wiring in your house, especially the pre-existing phone wiring.  That is your responsibility.

The Cable company was only responsibe to get your VoIP (digital phone) service operable through the cable Internet line working at the RJ-11 phone jack on the Digital Phone adapter box, but not to make it work with the wiring in the rest of your house.

Find the PSTN telephone "Demarcation box" where the outside PSTN phone line connects to the Demac box.  It should just be a RJ-11 plug and you should be able to just unplug it to disconnect yourself from the outside world PSTN service line.  Then your inside phone lines will be isolated and independant and should work better with the cable digital phone plugged into it.

  3. Have you tried calling your cable company and explaining your problem? You should tell them the technician only left you with one working phone jack. If the cable guy would have hooked up your phone modem correctly it would work all the outlets in your house that worked with your old phone service. Call them and make them fix it.
