The tine of a tuning fork, when struck, has an amplitude of 0.13 cm. If the frequency of the fork is 200 Hz, what total distance will the tine travel in 1.00 min

The answer is 62m but I don't know how to solve the question.

  1. The tine will not travel at all unless you physically move the tuning fork.

The tine will RESONATE. For each resonation the net distance is zero

    (+0.065 cm and -0.065 cm.)

    200/sec * 60 sec * (0.065 cm - 0.065 cm) =

    1200 * 0 cm = 0 cm

BTW: The tine is just the 2 prongs of the tuning fork sticking up.

BTW2: The amplitude is not a constant. As soon as you hit the tuning fork the amplitude begins to diminish to zero.

Although the end answer would be the same, the amplitude will differ depending on how far up the tuning fork you take your measure.

  2. 200 Hz men 200 times a second, then if the amplitude of the vibration is 0.13 cm in one minute = 60 seconds, it woud have vibrated 12000 times therefore the distance traveled woud be

    1200 X 0.13 = 156 cm and not 62 m
