Do you feel that the time off as an airline pilot is more quality than the time you would get after work at a 9-5 office job (which is never 9-5) ???

  1. well im not sure about that. I ve always wanted to be an airline pilot after i finished school. Pretty much i heard they get to work 30 hours a week. Thats less than average american work time.

  2. not really, i find that when i'm home i'm up when other ppl are sleeping and sleeping when they're up. it's just past 3am here right now and i'm wide awake and i dont think i'll sleep till around 8am...

  3. Well I guess it depends on what you mean by quality time off.

Sure the hours per month are low, but these are flying hours only.  Not included are the layover times, coming in early and doing walk around, researching weather, filing flight plans, compiling performance data, filling log books, etc, etc.

Then after you are released from your duties as a pilot, there is the cab or crew car ride to a hotel (could be nice or not nice, but still time away from home) or trying to jump seat back home to have a few days off before you do it all over again.

If you are very senior, you get the best routes, work the least hours, and get the best pay.  If you are just starting out the exact opposite is true.  With the mandatory retirement age of airline pilots raised to 65 and the large number of baby boomers in the top ranks, don't expect a cushy job too soon.

  4. it depends on the individual

    some people prefer set routines

others prefer routines with a little variation and family time

    others like long, big vacations
