  2. Sydney still has original early settlement areas, The Rocks and Parramatta for instance.Hobart Tasmania,The Port Phillip Convict Goal is a a large park with original buildings mostly restored and the island were early convicts were buried. Its a very eerie place especially if you take the night tour. They affected us in that we wouldnt be here if it wasnt for them  and our Political System has originated from British rule.Aboriginal places where they lived dont  exist as they were a nomadic population but you will find that they have special places where they left their drawings on the caves but a lot of these are not available to the public as they are sacred to the aboriginal.

  3. Port Arthur, Tasmania is of historical significance for two reasons.

Port Arthur on the Tasman Peninsula, Tasmania.

    Convict chain gangs

In 1830 Port Arthur was a timber station, but hardly three years later, because it was hemmed in by the sea and access by land was solely through a tiny isthmus at Eaglehawk Neck, it became a prison settlement where the worst of the convicts were thrown, sentenced to work in chain gangs.

Flogging became a way of life — 100 lashes being the normal punishment for, for instance, attempts to escape the penal settlement.

The prison closed in 1877, and in the next two decades the penitentiary and the church were gutted by fire.

    Sunday 28 April 1996

On the morning of Sunday 28 April 1996, a young Hobart man armed himself with three high-powered automatic firearms and a large quantity of ammunition, then drove to Port Arthur.

Before day's end, 35 lay dead on the historic grounds of Port Arthur. A Tasmanian named Martin Bryant had etched a trail of blood, firing at shopkeepers, shop assistants, tourists, and whoever else came in his way.

    Aftermath -

The devastating events of that day at Port Arthur encouraged Australians to question our laws on the private ownership of automatic and semi-automatic firearms. A vigorous national debate was marked by strongly-held views on both sides.

Eventually, State and Federal Governments passed new gun control laws that are among the strictest in the world.
