how can i get my uk playstation 3 to play import playstation 2 games

You can't. The PS3 still uses the same region coding for PS2 games that the PS2 did. You can play import PS3 games on any PS3 but not import PS2 games.

i take it you have a 40gb ps3 so you will have to change the harddrive i think

Simple answer: you can't.

The easiest option is to buy a used PS2 of the same region as the import games you want to play.
