Remember LED's are current devices. The best way to array LED's is to connect them in series so that the current can be controlled with a single resistance.

LED array is a collection of a number of LED's with their common anode or common cathode connected to ground. Now the supply is given at the other ends in accordancce to the output to be displayed.

The output is fed through a no of resistors by the programming fed into the processor on which it is running.
