I'm not sure how to do these problems, :

|3x+5|=5x+2

-|4-8x|=12

Oh.....and the directions says "Solve and check. If an equation has no solution, so state."

Can also show the work to see how you did it, please?

Thanks:)

  1. Ok the first one.

    Take the absolute value of the function in the absolute value lines --> 3x+5.  So then you have 3x+5=5x+2, so get like terms on the same side.  This gives you 3x+5-2=5x+2-2 --> 3x+3=5x --> 3x+3-3x=5x-3x --> 3=2x.  Then divide to get x --> 3/2 = x, x=1.5

    For the second one.

    Take the absolute value of the function in the absolute value lines --> 4+8x.  Then put this back into your equation -(4+8x)=12.  Then multiply the - (which stands for -1) across the function in parens.  You then get -4-8x = 12.  So get like terms on the same side.  -4-8x+4=12+4 --> -8x=16.  Then divide 16 by -8 and you get x = -2.

  2. lol omgod

    not to be rude but know i see why i did not sign up for algebra 2 haha

  3. 3X + 5 = 5X + 2

    -3X        -3X

    ------------------------------

            5 = 2X + 2

           -2          -2

          --------------------

            3  =  2x

         -------   ------

            2       2

    X = 1.5

    -4 - 8X = 12

    -4 + -8X = 12

    +4           + 4

    --------------------

          -8X = 16

         -------   -----

           -8     -8

    X = -2

    & there you have it!
