Please help before its too late!!?

i live in florida and have a 5 year-old and shes going to start kindergarten soon but i want to enroll her in a school thats out of my zip code. how can transfer her?

Call your county Board of Education to find out what options are available to you.  If the school you want is outside your district, most schools will allow you to transfer by paying "out-of-district tuition."  You will have to provide transportation to and from school.  

If the school you want is overcrowded, or if too many kids are transferring, or if there are political reasons for "balancing" school enrollment, you cannot do that. You would have move into that district.

Of course, if you really want the freedom to choose whatever you deem best for your child, pay for a private school.

Florida schools are done by county, not zip code.  There may be many schools your child is eligible to go to under the School Choice program.  Call the district office, or call the actual elementary school to inquire.  But isn't the deadline for that coming up soon?  I believe our school choice stuff had to be in by this time already.  You started a little late, but call anyway and ask.  There may still be space available.  Let me know if you need any help doing these things.  I don't know where you live in FL but I do have the info for schools in the counties near me since I'm a teacher.

I live in FL, too, and asked a local school the same thing. What I was told (now, this may be different depending on where you live in FL) was that I would have to enroll my children in the school they should be attending according to districting, then withdraw them and request the paperwork for a school transfer.

Seems like a bit of work, to me. But, when I lived elsewhere, my dad sent me to the school in the town where he worked instead of where we lived. All we had to do was tell the school board what the situation was, then enroll at the one school.

So, you should call your local school board and explain your situation. Different districts have different rules and regulations on enrollment. And, some may require different papers for successful transfers.

we are in Seminole County. my grand daughter goes to a grade school closer to her moms job and closer to after school care. we had to go to the school board before she started kindergarten. the change was approved for the whole K thru 5 period though. Good luck.
