Peter opened his book and found that the product of the page numbers for two facing pages was 156.What were the page numbers?

The problem is this:

ab=156... but you know a=b-1 (since its the previous page), so

(b-1)(b)=156

b^2 - b  =156

b^2 - b -156 = 0

(b+12)(b-13)=0

so the roots are -12 and 13, but a page number can't be negative... so b=13 and a=13-1=12

The pages are 12 and 13.

(12 x 13 = 156)

Facing page numbers are different by 1.

The page numbers are n and n+1, so we have

n(n + 1) = 156

n^2 + n - 156 = 0

(n + 13)(n - 12) = 0

Ignoring the negative value for n,

n = 12, the pages are 12 and 13, and their product is 156.
