Question:

Plumbing Problem in Bath/Shower?

by  |  earlier

just moved into an old 1940's home with old bath fixtures. I would love a bath but everytime we turn the water on it goes straight to the shower head. I am under the impression it is the water pressure but really have no idea what to do? I've tried

the release pull several times(a big fat nothing!!!)

  1. If it is a 1940's system there has to be a third faucet somewhere on the faucet system. But a newer system should have it on the tub faucet.Good luck.

  2. Try removing the tub spout. There should be a hex nut underneath that you can loosen with an allen wrench. Home Depot or Lowes sell new tub spouts. Be sure to get one with a diverter for the shower.

  3. diverter. call your plumber friend

  4. The diverter is either broken or someone has fixed it shut.  If you do not know your way around plumbing and do not have a friend that does, you need to have a plumber take a look.  Plumbers are expensive but would be less than the cost of the tools you may need to repair the problem.

  5. In the '40, there were no diverter valves and very few showers. Check for a different set of valves for the tub. It may be that someone re-plumbed the tub valves to the shower due to personal preferences.

Next, you can rip into the walls, exposing the plumbing and end up totally remodeling the whole bathroom, or for about the same price you could call a plumber.
