If you are just playing by yourself it is important to have a balance of types. It is important to teach pokemon moves with more than just thier type so that they can hurt as many things as possible.

If you are playing against others certain things are very common so it is important to have a counter against them. Dragons are most comon so it is important to have agood Ice Type to take them out with or a good Steel type to Defend against them.
