Polar shift reversal?

Okay, so heres my question, "if" there is a polor shift reversal in 2012, what does this mean? does anyone have a link to a good true source of what a pole shift reversal would really do to this planet?

"Polar sift" or "pole reversal" is the change of the north MAGNETIC pole to south, and the south MAGNETIC pole to north.  It is a process that takes several 100 years (or even several 1000), it does not  happen just in one year.

First the Earth's magnetic field weakens to about 1/4 of its current value.  Then several other magnetic poles come up here and there, some north, some south.  And the poles drift around a bit.  Then the main north pole dies to zero and comes back as a south pole, and the reverse for the south poles; but the extra poles around the Earth keep the overall magnetic field at about 1/4 or 1/5 of today's value.  Then the extra poles die away, and the main poles become stronger, until the full magnetic field is back to full strength, except reversed.

2012 will bring many things...

2012 is just the revealing of the 'antichrist' or the 'man of lawlessness' at the middle of what Jews and Christians call the 7 year Tribulation. It's not the Polar shift you should worry about, it's the axis change.

But all this might be false anyways like "Y2K"

The magnetic poles of the earth are not fixed. They slowly move around quite a bit. It is believed that a reversal is first manifest by a weakening of the magnetic field to the point where there may be many poles, followed by a rapid inversion.

The process can take a long time, a hundred years or more. During that time we may be able to see the aurora near equatorial latitudes, and there will be an increase in hard radiation from the sun due to the lack of particle deflection. Skin cancers may go up, but probably not much else will happen.

It won't happen in 2012, however it is expected sometime between 3000 and 4000 CE.

Magnetic pole reversals have happened in the past with no discernable surface changes.  However, as Charles Hapgood proposed, and Albert Einstein supported, there can be a structural shifting of polar mass, either with or without the magnetic reversal.  That would have a huge effect.  Hapgood postulates that it may have happened within human memory, and shifted the south pole roughly 1,000 miles, causing unimaginable catastrophe in temperate zones.

The magnetic poles move all the time.

There is a geologic record that shows it has happened many times in our past but not at regular intervals. Time between reversals can be 10000 yrs or a million years.

However - we know that the magnetic field does not collapse in the process - if it did, there would be major extinctions that correlate with the geologic record for pole reversals - there is no correlation.

The latest hypothesis is that the Earth's magnetic field gets chaotic, with lots of north and south poles - so we still have a magnetic field, but compasses will be useless. And then it straightens itself back out, but with north and south reverse.

This is actually similar to what the sun does - but the sun does it on a regular 11 year cycle.

As for when it will happen - those people that observe the magnetic field think it will go through its chaotic thing and reverse some time soon based on how it is currently behaving, but that is a hypothesis waiting for the event to occur to be tested, and the exact date certainly is not known.

Even if it was to begin in 2012 (and its possible it already began)

it wouldn't happen in one year or even a century and would not cause chaos.

Now for the rotational axis and its shift:

The axis of the earth does wobble on several known timescales. These wobbles are known as the Milankovic cycles.

Basically the axis of the earth’s rotation does not always point to Polaris (the Pole Star); and we are not always inclined at 23.5 deg. So the poles do move relative to the plane of the earth’s orbit around the sun, and relative to the stars – but the shifts are minor.
