Ok. Hoping to be in academy in january. Orientation is in September. What do you recommend i start doing now to prepare for the police academy? Currently I am in great shape, and practice mixed martial arts religiously. I am in school and studying constantly. Also, i have no medical problems, no criminal background, and have two brothers who are currently cops. Do you think i can get in? Please give advice...

  1. Looks like you have the academics covered.

    If its like my academy...

Start running, sing cadence to yourself while you run.

Google the following: "Front Leaning Rest" practice it.

Learn to spit shine (will put you way ahead) get some Kiwi "Parade gloss"

Learn to starch and iron uniforms.

Find out how to salute properly, oh yea, look up "squareing your corners"

The above will help you through the first, and hardest, week.

    When you get in.

Forget everything you know about police work, they will teach you what you need to know.

If you dont like the D.I.'s, remember, you can play anyones game for six months. (The day after the academy graduates they will be a whole other person to you.)

Form a study group of people you think are squared away, former reserves, MP's and so on. Ask your D.I.'s privately who s/he would pick (your DI's will be more helpful then you think, in fact I bet you would earn kudos for it)

Ask family members who went through the academy about the scenarios, practice them.

Keep an extra squared away uniform in your car... Just in case.

And remember the motto of my academy.

Never give up, Never quit, Go to the end.

  2. Run Run Run!!!! I don't know if your putting yourself through or have been hired by a department who is sponsoring you. You will be fine, you need the drive and want to be an officer whole heartedly. If you have that you'll be good to go. Good Luck to you.

  3. It sounds to me that you have prepared all that you possibly can.  You're physically fit, study hard and you have knowledge of the field through family members.  As long as you have a good support system at home, you should excel at the academy.  Good luck!

  4. Sounds like you are doing the right things.  The academy requires physical strength, intense studying, and the ability to bite your tongue for 6 months.  When you get in, it is "yes sir", "no sir", standing at attention for long periods of time while an instructor is yelling at you.  Get used to starching your clothes, and checking them twice for wrinkles or hanging threads.

    Good luck and stay safe.

  5. I think you have a great chance of getting in!  Around here, it's all about who you know.  As far as what to prepare for, every academy is different.  We have three different Police Academys in my state of Arkansas.  I just finished in June.  We did intense work-outs every morning and tons of running....... Tons of running.  Make sure you can run....... for long distances.  The farthest we ran was 7 miles.  Plenty of Push-ups too.  But another academy in our state barely makes the cadets do workouts.  They concentrate more on the academic portion.  Just make sure you are a great people person and have a good head on your shoulders and you should have no problem.  If at first you don't get in, try again. You will make it.
