My husband may possibly be getting a job in Alaska.. We currently live in Montana.. We have lived in Washington, Oregon, California and Montana.. DO you think Alaska is a good move?? Anyone from Kenai have any suggestions?? It is a 20 dollar an hour raise.. We would be moving from a tiny town in Montana.. I currently drive 85 miles each way to go to nursing school.. I guess I just want to hear opinions and what anyone from Alaska thinks...

  1. you will love the Kenai Peninsula and believe it or not the weather will be milder than MT  you will still drive alot (and also utilize the Alaskan ferry system)  I would love to move there (been there a few times)

  2. it depends what job. Good or Bad?  its your choice and your husbands

  3. Lived in Alaska for awhile and wish I could live there the rest of my life. I lived on the Kenai peninsula and it was gorgeous, but might not be what you think. Kenai itself is a regular little town and the cost of living definitely is not more than $20 an hour more than Montana unless you don't have a mortgage at all.

I don't know if you're in the mountains of Montana or in the plains, but Kenai is kind of different from other cities in the general area because it is flat and right on the ocean. Most of the other cities nearby (Homer, Seward, Anchorage...) all are surrounded by beautiful mountains. In my opinion, this made Kenai somewhat bland, but you may think totally different.

  4. Not an expert, but I have visited the little town of  Kenai, and it's pretty, and probably WARMER than anything in Montana.

If you are used to small town life, I do not see any problem moving there. You should find out more about the economics however, as prettymuch EVERTHING has to be imported there, esp. food and vegetables.

So if he makes $20 more an hours he might be paying that much more for household essentials too.

My advice: Google "cost of living Alaska" and see what you find.

Meanwhile hope someone from the town itself responds.
